When Should I Call an Ant Control Expert?

If you are not sure you have an ant infestation, you should check for a few telltale signs.

    Ants Outside

If you have ants outside near your home, they will find their way inside too!

When you see ants outside, look for big groups of ants clustering together. This is the sign of an ant colony, which is bad news because colonies will move indoors for safety, food and water and can create stressful issues for you and your family.

    Ant Trails

Ants like to walk in groups and generally space themselves out into lines. When they walk in lines, they create a pheromone trail to a food source, which allows other ants behind them to follow.

In order to properly eradicate ants, our ant control technicians treat not only individual ants but also the colony. We take advantage of the pheromone trails they have already created without the ants ever knowing.

    Ants Near Food

Ants will easily find exposed food. You might also see ants surrounding your pets’ food bowls. It’s important to keep these containers of food closed or outside your home. If you find ants in your food, it’s also a sign that you need to do something to take care of your ant problem.

Types of Ants to Look Out For

    Pavement Ants

You know where to look for these ants – on the pavement. You will likely see them hiding in the cracks in your driveway, your home’s foundation, or concrete patios. They are minuscule creatures, less than ¼ of an inch, and don’t move quickly. They are generally black or brown in color.

    Carpenter Ants

Carpenter ants are some of the largest common ants, measuring in at around half an inch long. They are usually black but are sometimes shades of dark red. They love to make their home in damp wood, where they create nests. Unfortunately, this sometimes means infesting structural wood members causing structural damage!

    Odorous House Ants

House ants are generally dark brown or black, and they are fairly small. They are hungry pests, so you will most likely find them in your pantry or kitchen cupboards. They also sometimes travel underneath cabinetry or refrigerators in search of food. They give off the smell of rotten coconut when they are crushed, giving them their name.

    Pharaoh Ants

Pharaoh ants are some of the toughest of the most common ants. They are quite resilient and generally require professional assistance to eradicate. It is very difficult to get rid of individuals and even more difficult to eliminate their invisible nests. And don’t try the DIY products, you can make the infestation worse.

Pharaoh ants carry bacteria and can very easily spread it into households. They are known for carrying staph and salmonella, making them particularly dangerous. They’re also very small, about an eighth of an inch, and they can range in color (from red to tan).

    Flying Ants

Flying ants can be scary because, unlike other ants, they have wings. Flying ants’ main objective is to reproduce and start new colonies.

Flying ants generally enter homes when they are looking for a new place to breed, particularly if you have conducive conditions like dampness and moisture. This is bad news because a few flying ants in the short term could mean hundreds upon hundreds of flying ants in the near future. This is why it’s important to act quickly to protect yourself and your family.

Flying ants look like termites, and like termites, they can shed their wings. Have a professional Pest Management Consultant from TermiGuard determine whether you have termites or flying ants to craft an appropriate solution to your issue..

    Little Black Ants

While black ants will not damage your furniture or home like carpenter ants, they will contaminate your food. They come in armies to scavenge. If you see one of these pesky creatures, it’s important to keep your eyes peeled because there is definitely more hiding in the background.

Black ants are particularly prolific in the summertime and like to feed on grease, oil, meat, and fruits.

    Fire Ants

Do you remember these ants from the playground? These small, red ants are angry critters. When disturbed, they will attack humans with a painful sting. These ant bites are prone to infection and will last for days on end.

Fire ants are actually an invasive species and are mostly found in the American South, though some species of fire ants can also be found in some areas of New Jersey.

“They know what they’re doing and get the job done”

“I’ve been with Termiguard for years. Moved homes and they moved with us. They know what they’re doing and get the job done. … Wouldn’t take my business anywhere else!!!”

What are the Dangers of Ants?

Ants pose dangers such as food contamination, property damage,
& bites/stings that can cause pain, allergic reactions, and health hazards.

    Food Contamination

Ants will enter your home to access your food. Unfortunately, ants can carry bacterial and fungal organisms. These can infect your food and can even spread serious disease pathogens in your kitchen. When you see ants in your food, it’s important to act fast. Even if you don’t see them in a particular food, they may be traveling across or around it and leaving pathogens in their wake.

    Property Damage

Certain types of ants, like acrobat ants and carpenter ants, construct nests in decaying wood or damp wood or paper. Moisture – which exists in most homes – can create the perfect environment for ants to thrive and build their homes. When they build nests inside your South Jersey home, they can destroy structural members and interior walls.

    Bites and Stings

We all know how much ant bites hurt. When ants feel threatened, they may bite humans, and they often do this in groups or clusters. People can be very allergic to these stings and bites, and they can be a serious health hazard for some. They can be particularly dangerous and frightening for children.

How Can I Get Rid of Ants?

Getting rid of ants by yourself can be a very daunting task. Ants are small and numerous and very difficult to eradicate successfully. Are they feeding on proteins or carbohydrates? Determining their food source is critical in ant control and ant exterminating.
The best choice you can make when trying to rid your house of ants is to call a professional with the necessary tools and training to get rid of ants the right way, quickly. This prevents ants from building more nests and becoming more and more difficult to eradicate.

It’s very simple and straightforward to begin your journey toward eradicating your home of ants with TermiGuard. TermiGuard offers several services that will begin the process of getting rid of ants immediately.

How Can I Prevent Ants to Begin With?

    Clean Up

Be sure to clean up any food and liquid spills as soon as possible. Even though a small spill or a few crumbs might not seem like a big deal, it’s important to clean up those spills as soon as you’re able. Beyond cleaning surfaces, it’s also important to sweep floors. Floors are the first point of contact for ants.

    Contain Your Food

Put your food in containers or Tupperware. Whatever you do, don’t leave it out for ants to munch on! If you make a habit of it, more and more ants will come in search of food. You don’t want them to think that it’s for them

    Seal Cracks & Crevices

Make sure that your home is as airtight as your food containers! If you notice any cracks or holes in your walls or foundation, these could be entry points for ants or other pests. Work to close these holes and gaps as soon as possible.
