It’s Not Just What You See, It’s What’s Underneath It
A beautiful patio or deck is only as good as the ground it sits on.
Get the topography wrong, elevation wrong, or the pitch wrong underneath a porch, patio, or deck, and the project that looked perfect on installation day can allow water to settle or flow straight back toward your foundation within a short few years.
At TG Fenwick Building and Renovations, outdoor living spaces are built by the same team that handles waterproofing, foundation repair, and structural work inside the home. That means every deck, patio, porch, and outdoor kitchen we build starts with the same question we ask on every water damage or foundation job: how and where is the water from rainfall going to drain properly?
Designed Right
We review your design goals, your wish list, and your material options. Design goes beyond being pretty; it has to account for function, traffic flow, and entertainment spaces.
Built to Last
Every project starts with the proper elevation and topography worked out correctly, not just the colors and style of materials like pavers or decking.
One Team, Start to Finish
Our own crews handle the masonry, framing, and hardscaping in-house, so nothing gets lost between a designer and a subcontractor.
Confident Choice
You're working with a remodeling/restoration company with structural, waterproofing, and exterior drainage expertise, backed by 500+ 4.9-star Google reviews.
Outdoor living space covers a lot of ground.
It is built around a few core categories:
Decks
Traditional wood or low-maintenance composite decking
Patios
Poured concrete or paver hardscaping
Front Porches
Including porches with roof coverings
Walkways
Connections that tie the space together
Retaining Walls
Most often built with stone
Built-ins
Outdoor kitchens, grilling stations, fireplaces, and entertainment centers
Unlike many hardscape and patio companies, our masonry work is handled entirely in house rather than subcontracted out. We also handle sprinkler relocation and rerouting in-house when irrigation lines fall in the footprint of a new patio or deck.
Why Grading and Topography Make or Break Every Project
Get the topography wrong under a deck, patio, or porch, and you cannot fix it after the fact without tearing the project apart and starting new.
One of the most common problems we’re called in to fix is an old concrete porch or patio capped with pavers instead of removed. Once that concrete is capped, there is no reliable way to know whether the structure underneath is slowly settling.
Capping over an existing concrete slab can also raise the finished height above the home’s floor framing. If that transition is not flashed correctly, water can work behind the siding and rot the framing underneath.
- Is the hardscape patio designed above or below where the house framing meets the foundation wall?
- Is the pitch under a low deck sloping the correct way?
- Will the surrounding yard and neighboring grades be affected by poor water management?
Outdoor living spaces require a balance between drainage function and comfort, which is exactly why experience matters.
Every Step Is Planned Around Water, Grade, & Structure
Assess the ground first
Before any material goes down, we work out the elevation and grade the project needs, tying it into foundation walls, roof runoff, and the rest of the yard's topography.
Build it in-house
Our own crews handle masonry, hardscaping, and framing, whether that is poured concrete, pavers, composite or wood decking, or a porch roof.
Catch what a hardscaper would miss
Because our team works structural and water damage jobs every day, we build outdoor spaces to avoid becoming next year's foundation or framing repair.
Why a Remodeling & Restoration Builder Is Different From a Hardscaper/Landscaper
Most patio and hardscape companies are skilled at what is visible: clean paver lines, level surfaces, and attractive finishes. What they typically are not set up to understand is building science, how a structure sits on the ground beneath it, and what happens over time if that ground is not handled correctly.
Homes we’re called to for water intrusion, mold, or foundation repair frequently trace back to a patio, porch, or deck that looked great on day one, but was never designed correctly with water in mind.
Building outdoor living spaces the right way from the start means a homeowner never has to pay for that project twice: once for the beautiful patio, and again to fix the damage it caused.
Outdoor Living Space FAQs
What's included in an outdoor living space project?
Decks in wood or composite materials, patios in concrete or pavers, front porches with or without roof coverings, walkways, retaining walls, and built-ins like outdoor kitchens, grilling stations, and fireplaces.
Do you handle the masonry and concrete work yourselves?
Yes. Masonry, hardscaping, and framing through finish trim are handled by our own in-house crews rather than subcontracted out. This keeps the grading and drainage work consistent from planning through the finished project.
Why does grading matter so much for a patio or deck?
Getting the elevation and pitch wrong underneath a patio, porch, or deck sends water toward the house instead of away from it. Over time, that can lead to foundation settling, lateral movement, framing rot, and a project that has to be torn out and rebuilt.
Do you do landscaping or planting?
Not directly. We focus on the design, grade/drainage, structural, and hardscape side of outdoor living spaces, but we coordinate with a landscaper for planting and finishing touches when a project calls for it. We also handle sprinkler relocation as needed.
