How Do I Know I Know I Have Rodents?
There are several signs that rodents might be living in your home:
- Droppings, especially around food sources, in cupboards, or under sinks. Rat droppings are olive-shaped, while mouse droppings are smaller and taper at the ends.
- Nesting material, including shredded paper, pellet sized pieces of insulation, chewed wiring, or bits of cloth.
- Stale, sharp odors.
- Dog food kibbles hidden in small spaces.
- Chewed food packaging.
- Scratching sounds from within walls and ceilings.
“I Recommend Termiguard Highly!”
“I have been a TermiGuard customer for 18 years – Omar was my technician this week, he arrived on time, was respectful of my property, handled the inspection perfectly! I recommend TermiGuard (and Omar!) highly.”
What Types of Rodents Should I Watch Out For?
Rodents are everywhere outdoors, and they can enter just about anywhere if they set their teeth to it. They are known to nibble through wood, plastic, aluminum, rubber, and even cinder blocks. The average home has dozens of entry points for these critters to enter through, and infestations can quickly grow beyond control. Rodents are a serious concern to homes and businesses. They can spread disease, destroy clothing and food sources, and even be fire-hazards.
Mice are small and furry. The typical house mouse is under four inches in length. Some can fit into quarter-inch cracks and jump over a foot in the air–and they can climb even higher. Mice eat 15 to 20 times per day–yikes! They also chew up inedible items like wiring and insulation to build their nests. (Chewed wiring can be a major cause of house fires!) A mother mouse can birth up to a dozen pups. Female mice can have a new litter every three weeks, and they will quickly multiply, out of control, if left alone.
Rats are medium-sized rodents with long, bald tails. Brown rats can grow 16 inches long (not including their tails). They are primarily nocturnal and live underground in “mischiefs,” the cute (not really!) term used for rat colonies. And if you thought mice were speedy breeders, you’re in for a shock: female brown rats can have up to twenty babies in a litter and well over a thousand offspring a year.
Rats have traveled with us through history, stowing away on boats and settling down alongside cities and towns. They are known for spreading the Black Death, which was carried by the fleas that rode on them.
South Jersey Rodents
Rodent infestations are rampant in South Jersey. Many homes have been overrun by mice and rats that destroy clothes, steal food, and spread disease. Rodents have besieged many housing complexes, and many businesses have had to permanently close their doors due to infestations. Right now, families struggle to get by as rodent infestations jeopardize their quality of life and infestations have overrun cities and spread to the suburbs.
Diseases Rodents Can Spread:
- Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis (LCM)
- Bubonic plague
- Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome
- Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome
- Lassa Fever
- Lujo Hemorrhagic Fever
“Respond Quickly Whenever I Need Them”
“Have an annual contract/package with them. Staff are courteous whenever they come by. They are thorough with the inspections, and respond quickly whenever I need them to deal with some kind of infestation (ants, wasps, etc).”
Preventing Rodent Infestations
We at TermiGuard want you to live stress free. That’s why we stress preventative measures. Prevention is the best course of action–and overall the least expensive.
There are several ways to prevent rodents
from entering your home:
- Seal holes inside and outside the home
- Remove potential nesting sites. This means clearing away any materials that rodents could use for nesting, including leaf piles, wood chips, and cloth scraps.
- Store garbage in rodent-proof bins.
- Keep bird feeders away from the house.
- Clean up spilled food right away.
- Store compost and wood at least 100 feet away from the home.
- Keep animal feed in tightly-sealed bins.
- Seal leaks in and around the home. Water sources attract all sorts of pests, including rodents.
- Use rodent-proof construction methods.
Get Rodent Help Today!
Here are a few methods you can use to prevent a small rodent problem from growing into a serious infestation.
Use Bait Stations
These disposable containers contain rodenticides and are made to prevent children and pets from reaching the bait that’s inside. Rodents will ingest the bait and typically go to the exterior to find water. This means that they will die away from the bait station.
Essential oils alone won’t get rid of rodents, but applied along the exterior of the foundation can help to deter them. They also irritate their skin and noses. Placing essential oils around possible nesting grounds will discourage rodent colonies from forming.
Homeowners looking for natural ways to get rid of rodents have discovered that attracting predatory birds to their area can effectively keep infestations at bay. You can set up nesting boxes and perches to attract raptors like owls and hawks. In this way, humans have lived symbiotically with predatory birds throughout history.
There are various types of rodent traps, including sticky traps, snap traps, and catch-and-hold traps. Sticky traps and snap traps are placed along rodent navigation routes, and snap down when the rodent triggers the spring mechanism. Catch-and-hold traps can be used to capture rodents without killing them. Keep in mind that trap-setting alone will not solve major rodent infestations.
You can use several safe rodent repellents around your home. Most repellents are liquid or come dry in small packs. Most are based on scents that discourage rodents from inhabiting your home. There are many natural options. Some work well, others not so much. Some companies even advertise “ultrasonic” repellents that emit high-pitched sounds and vibrations, but there is scant evidence that these devices have any benefits.
Need an Exterminator?
Most DIY methods won’t get rid of rodent infestations, especially large ones. If you suspect rodents in your home, call a pest control professional, like TermiGuard Pest Services, for a free cursory rodent inspection and pest consultation. The problem might be bigger than you think.
Some signs that it’s time to call an exterminator include:
- You have seen multiple rodents
- Your pets regularly catch rodents. Rodents often carry fleas and ticks, and can spread diseases to pets (and people!).
- Gnaw marks and oily marks on boxes, walls, boards, and other materials. Mice and rats always want something to gnaw at, especially when nesting. This is dangerous since gnawed wiring is a serious fire hazard.
- Signs of nesting in or around your home. This means they’re settling down and getting cozy.
- Rat or mouse droppings. These can spread diseases to humans and pets and are very unhealthy to have around.
- Odors. The stale, pungent smell of rodent urine builds up over time when rodents nest nearby.
